Intro To Twitter

Twitter in a nutshell is a simple social networking website that lets you share with your friends know what you’re doing – right now! Hence the old catch phrase on the Twitter sign-up page –“What are you doing?” Think of Facebook, instant messaging and sms all rolled into one simple package, and you’ve got Twitter.

Twitter works around a time line which is displayed on a single page that’s updated every second of every minute of every hour….you get my point. It’s a constantly updated stream of news from people all around the world. As a member, you can add your own little message to the time line up to 140 characters long to it known as a “tweet”.

But that doesn’t mean you’re going to be able to see every Twitter user’s Tweets. You can choose who you want to “Follow” and others can choose to Follow you. And it’s these followers who you can converse (tweet) with.

You might be thinking “wow, big deal” but there is massive potential in this mini social networking site to meet other like-minded people, share info and web site links. And those factors mixed with the ability to grow your followers make it a perfect platform for business.

You can also use Twitter to….

* Send direct messages to users instead of broadcasting to everyone,

* Mobile options to send and receive tweets via SMS and email from your cellphone,

* Search options allowing you to find Twitter users posting about a certain topic,

* An API that allows 3rd party developers to develop some great applications.

It’s taking the world by storm and there is a great potential for business owners, online and off, so if you’re not a member yet, sign up for a free Twitter account now.

Re-Tweeting

Now let’s talk about getting your Tweets spread even further and increasing the chance of meeting even more people by using ‘re-tweets’.

Re-tweeting is a common practice on Twitter where you’ll re-post someone else’s tweet that you like and you think your followers will like.

With this method, you take the original twitter message someone else has posted, and rebroadcast that same message to your followers. To do a re-tweet, simply type in RT at the beginning of your tweet and then a @ before the original tweeters username followed by their original tweet.

Now Twitter will let you click the Retweet button on the Twitter website which will set up the RT function automatically.

Reasons To Re-Tweet

When broadcasting the message, you should definitely give credit to the original poster in the way I showed you above. I know at first it may sound like this will only be good for the original tweeter, but retweeting can actually benefit you just as much if not more because;

1. It provides more value to your followers.

When you provide value to your followers, you make them happy! You are also more likely to attract followers. Providing quality content is always a great way to build your business no matter what platform you use.

2. It will benefit your brand.

If you point a reader to a source if good information that is truly relevant and beneficial to them, the amount of trust that they have in you will increase.

3. It will help you build relationships with the original posters.

Retweeting someone else’s content is an act of kindness, and for the most part bloggers like to return the favor. You shouldn’t expect someone to re-tweet your content just because you retweet theirs. Just keep in mind that your chance of being on the other end of a re-tweet increases as you retweet.

Retweeting is all about providing value to your followers so if you want others to retweet your post then you want to make sure that you are providing them with quality content worth tweeting about.

The bottom line is retweeting is a great way to add quality and value to your Twitter page. If done right, retweeting can help you educate your followers, build your personal brand, increase future traffic, and connect you to other great people in your niche.

Just be careful if you use it incorrectly, retweeting can actually hurt your personal brand and future traffic. You want to treat your followers like gold. Don’t ever send them to inappropriate websites or spam them with one sales pitch after another.

Five Ways that YouTube Can Help Small Businesses

YouTube is one of the fastest growing ways that small businesses are using to promote themselves. It makes good business sense; YouTube is viewed by millions of people from all over the world every day. It is one of the best ways to get the word out about your business. YouTube offers many ways to help small businesses, particularly with marketing.

Low-Cost Advertising and Marketing

It is very difficult to grow your business without some form of advertising. Unfortunately, advertising can also be quite costly. Advertising is one of the biggest expenses most businesses, particularly small ones have. Advertising campaigns can cost many thousands of dollars. To air just one television commercial, you would have to rent expensive equipment, pay for actors, editors, and filmmakers, and the air-time. YouTube takes many of these costs away. For the most part it is free to post videos to YouTube. Not only that, but you yourself could take video with a personal digital camera.

Increased Advertising and Marketing Freedom

Most methods of advertising and marketing are very constrained. A television commercial can only be so long. Newspaper ads must be under a certain word limit. Certain words and images are not allowed in either medium. None of this matters on YouTube. If you want to give a fifteen minute demonstration of all of your products features, you certainly can. You can market towards an adult audience you will be able to, although there are limits. If you feel like your product is best advertised by a dose of adult humor, you probably will be able to on YouTube.

Advertising and Marketing As Entertainment

For the most part, people ignore advertisements. How many people use DVR’s or TIVO’s so that they can fast forward through commercials? In all honesty, how many newspaper ads do you read every day? The benefit of YouTube is that it exists for entertainment.

People watching YouTube videos are doing so for their amusement. Someone who watches the marketing and advertising videos that you post will be doing so by choice. Because they are doing so by choice, they are much more likely to pay attention to what you are saying. You can even disguise advertising and marketing as entertainment on YouTube. You could make a humorous video where your product is prominently featured or mentioned. There possibilities are only limited by your creativity.

Potential for Customer Identification

One of the most important aspects of marketing is customer identification – who are our customers and who might become our customers. Many millions are spent every year doing so. YouTube makes this easy. The people who view your content are at least somewhat interested in your company or its products. They saw that your video was posted, and they chose to view it. The people who comment on your video are likely the ones who are most interested. Many users have their own pages which you can comment on or may contain contact information which you can use connect with them in the future.

Viewer Feedback

It is essential that businesses receive feedback from customers about all aspects of their operation: products, services, customer service, advertising and marketing campaigns, etc. Feedback allows businesses to improve their products and their operations. Feedback also allows businesses to solve problems that customers have had with them, and thus make it more likely that customers will be retained.

Almost every YouTube video has a multitude of comments posted underneath them. These comments function as feedback. All comments, even negative ones are useful. For example, if users seem to think that the stars of your video are lacking in acting ability, you would be best suited in finding other stars for future videos. Or if users comment that a product which you are advertising is lacking features that a competitor’s product has, you may be able to add those features to your product.

How To Use LinkedIn Answers to Build Your Reputation

LinkedIn has enormous potential to increase both your personal reputation and that of your business. One great way is by smart us of the “Answers” feature.  LinkedIn allows users to both ask and answer questions of other users, as well as to become “experts”. If done effectively, both asking and answering questions can dramatically increase your authority and reputation.

Asking questions via LinkedIn can initiate discussions with your peers and may lead to gaining important contacts in your field or niche. People that you may never have met otherwise may answer your questions or become involved in the discussion of the answer. Many of these people will be members of your field or have connections to it. Some may become valuable contacts and resources in the future. The more contacts and resources that you have, the higher your reputation is likely to be.

In order to most effectively make contacts through asking questions, you must take care in crafting your questions. Many of the best questions are content-based. For example, “What are the best methods for using LinkedIn to find job opportunities?” The answers to this question will tend to be factual and on-topic.

It is also best to ask questions that have multiple possible answers. It makes it more likely that you will receive multiple answers from multiple responders, thus increasing the number of contacts. It is also more likely to lead to debate among responders, which increases familiarity and the likelihood of increased contact in the future.

If you want to increase your reputation, be put some forethought into the questions that you ask. While it has been said that there are no dumb questions, some questions are certainly smarter than others. If you regularly ask intriguing and thought-provoking questions, others are more likely to be interested in you and to hold you in high regard. On the other hand, if you ask questions that are likely to make people believe you know little of your field or are looking for others to do your homework for you, the opposite may occur.

Answering questions can improve your reputation or that of your company even more than asking them. Most who ask questions are in genuine need of assistance. Giving genuine answers to questions may lead to you being seen as a helpful and generous person. If you help others, they are more likely to return the favor in the future and are also likely to appreciate and respect you. Be careful, giving wrong or poor answers can actually cause more harm than no answer at all and may damage your reputation.

The type of answers which you give can impact how you or your business are perceived. If you give an answer that the user finds helpful, that person’s regard for you will almost certainly increase. If you give an answer on a discussion that many find either useful or thought-provoking, the same will occur on a greater scale. You would be surprised how much a discussion can benefit even those who are experts on a topic.

There are so many potential ideas that no one person can have them all. Make sure that your answers are well-thought out accurate. Also make sure that you use correct spelling and grammar.

Answering enough questions well can actually have you labeled an “expert.” LinkedIn rewards repeated high quality answers by allowing certain users to have a white and green star on their profile labeled “Expert.” This instantly allows those who view your profile to see that you are an expert on a topic. This will immediately grant you respect and approval. Others will be considerably more likely to seek out your help and services in the future if they consider you an expert.

10 Reasons Twitter Isn’t a Waste of Time

Many people see Twitter as a waste of time. However, Twitter is extremely useful in growing your business or your freelance career. There are many potential benefits to using Twitter.

Free Advertising

Twitter can ban accounts that it considers spam. However, that does not prevent you from using Twitter to do a reasonable amount of advertising and marketing. Almost all advertising is beneficial, especially when it’s free. Just be sure not to alienate users by putting out a constant stream of promotional tweets or spamming them individually with direct messages or @ replies.

Small Time Commitment

How long does it take to plan out and tweet 140 characters? The answer is probably not very long. You may be very busy throughout the day, but chances are that you will have time to tweet once or twice.

Self-Promotion

If you want to be successful in business, you will have to learn to self-promote. Some of the most successful businessmen, entertainers, and writers are all ruthless self-promoters. At its heart, Twitter is a means of self-promotion. A tweet lets others know what you are doing, how you feel, or what your opinion is and keeps you in the public eye.

Arousing Customer Interest

Strategic tweeting can generate significant customer interest. For example, if you are releasing a new product or work, you can regularly update that you have something special in the works, and that you’ll make an announcement later. By the time you make the announcement, there will be many followers dying to know what it is.

Staying In Customers Minds

Many customers will make a purchase and then think nothing of it again, particularly the source. By regularly tweeting, followers will take notice of you throughout the day. This way, you or your company will always be fresh in their minds.

Targeted Advertising

Companies spend millions of dollars trying to figure out who they should market to. Twitter makes this unnecessary. Your Twitter followers are already interested in you. The announcements that you make to them will be more effective on a per person basis than other advertising.

Ability to Make the News

Tweets now regularly make the news. Major news outlets cover stories about tweets multiple times a day. If you gain enough followers, or make a news-worthy tweet, you might make the local, or even national, news. This will expose you to the millions who are not on Twitter.

Huge Potential for Followers

There are over 200 Million Twitter users. While the vast majority of those will probably never follow you, how many other free means of advertising are you aware of that even have the potential to reach over 200 million people?

Enhanced Customer Relationships

Business is all about relationships. The most successful businesses and freelancers maintain solid relationships with customers, suppliers, and other members of the industry for years, or even decades. Twitter is a means to form and solidify your relationship with your followers, many of who are likely to be customers or potential customers.

Keeping Abreast Of Your Industry and Your Competitors

Twitter not only allows others to follow you, but for you to follow others. You can follow the accounts of competitors, or industry insiders. This allows you to find out what is happening in your field, and how others are reacting to it. This allows you to react accordingly. For example, it is probably in your best interest to know when your competitors are having a sale, and what the sale is for. This will allow you to have a competing sale.

LinkedIn Etiquette: The Do’s and Don’ts of Using LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a valuable social and professional networking site that has already helped thousands of users to further their careers. However, as with everything in life, there are certain rules and guidelines which should be followed when using LinkedIn.

Do: Be honest and professional. Everything on your profile should be true and in no way misleading. Everything should make you appear to be a professional and desirable employee.

Don’t: Have any spelling or grammar mistakes on your profile. Few things are as big of a turnoff to an employer as to see that you were unwilling to take the time or the effort to ensure that your work is mistake-free.

Do: Include a picture with your profile. Although LinkedIn does not require users to use a picture, it is highly advisable to do so. A picture makes your profile more personable and genuine. Not having a picture can put doubt in the minds of potential employers.

Do: Wear professional attire in your picture. Also, place yourself in front of a neutral-colored, blank background. Make sure that you are in a professional pose.

Don’t: Include an old or fake picture. If you show up for an interview looking drastically different from your picture, a potential employer will be surprised, and possibly put-off or angry.

Do: Have an eye-catching and interesting headline. You headline is the first impression that you will make on potential contacts and employers. If you can catch their attention, they may want to find out more about you.

Don’t: Have a generic and/or overly long headline. Nobody will pay attention if they are bored or have seen the same line a thousand times before.

Do: Regularly update your What Are You Working On with new and different projects. This shows that you are a hard and diligent worker, who can handle a variety of tasks.

Don’t: Post What Are You Working On updates that may cause an employer to question your skills, dedication or work ethic. Saying that you are, “Doing things your own way,” will not inspire confidence.

Do: Include unique and specific job descriptions. For example, if you regularly traveled to a foreign country, say which country and what you did there. This will help distinguish you.

Don’t: Include false or misleading work experience. While it acceptable and expected that you will make yourself look as good as possible, do not carry this into the realm of falsehood.

Do: Personalize your web pages, URL’s, and web addresses. For example, instead of “My Webpage,” use “Jane Doe’s Salesmanship Webpage.” This will make you stand out from the thousands of other LinkedIn users.

Don’t: Include links to web pages, URL’s, and web addresses that contain content which may turn off potential employers. If your blog includes a post entitled, “The Top Ten Most Embarrassing Things I Did in College,” you should either not link to that blog, or remove that post.

Do: Make a good summary. Use the summary as an opportunity to make one final sell of yourself. Think of the summary as an opportunity to seal the deal. What would your closing argument in favor of hiring you be?

Don’t: Have an overly long summary. Potential employers and clients often look through hundreds or even thousands of profiles. If they see that your summary is too long, they may not even bother reading it. Even if they do start, and then become bored, they will stop and move on.

LinkedIn Etiquette, what do you practice?

What Are The Benefits Of A Facebook Fan Page?

As a small business owner or a freelancer, you’re always on the lookout for new and inexpensive ways to promote your business. One of the cheapest and most useful means available is to create a Facebook fan page. A fan page is similar to a personal Facebook profile, only it is for a company, product, band, television show, etc. Fan pages offer many benefits to those who have them.

Personal Satisfaction

It is impossible to overstate how frustrating being a small business owner or freelancer can be. You may work for hours and hours and not seem to get anything done. Facebook fan pages allow you to see that others do appreciate and enjoy your work. This minor boost can be enough to recharge your batteries and keep you going.

A Huge Potential Audience

Facebook has over 700 million users, all of whom have access to your fan page. Realistically, a very small portion ever will, but the option remains. Can you think of any other free form of advertising that could even potentially reach 700 million people?

Greater Interactivity than Most Other Web Pages

While all web pages offer the potential for interactivity, few offer the easy options of a Facebook fan page. The very nature of Facebook is to be an interactive environment, and it makes connecting and interacting with others very easy. So many people interact on Facebook that you may even become inundated with comments, messages, and likes.

Potential for Rapid Expansion of Fan Base

There are many people who spend a great deal of time looking at the profiles of their Facebook friends. These people are often interested in checking out fan pages that catch their eye. These people may then become fans of yours. Even if a very small percentage of each of your fans friends becomes interested in you in this way, the cumulative effects can be huge. For example, let’s say that you only get one new fan per every five existing fans in this manner. That would still increase your fan base by 20%, which is huge.

Targeted Advertising and Announcements

Some companies spend millions of dollars to find the customers that their marketing dollars will be best spent on. Facebook fan pages eliminate the need to do so. Anything that you advertise or announce on your fan page will be seen by people who are already interested in your products or work. These are the people who are most likely to purchase your products and services, maximizing your dollars earned per effort spent.

Customer Identification

Companies often become the most profitable when consumers begin to personally identify with a product or work. For example, certain clothing companies make most of their profit because skaters and surfers consider those brands part of their lifestyle. When someone becomes a fan on your fan page, it signifies that he or she is personally identifying with you in some way.

Improved Relationship with Potential Customers

Business is all about relationships, especially with customers. Facebook is designed to nurture relationships. Facebook allows for instant communication between a business and its fans. Fans can give feedback, which allows for you to improve your services. If you contact fans and implement their suggestions, their satisfaction level will increase, as will their sense of goodwill towards you and your endeavors. Facebook will allow you to nurture your relationships with your customers year after year and allow them to feel like part of your community.
